Message from Parish Nurse, Kathy DiSanto, ARNP

Now for your homework!

If you said that African Americans are affected by stroke more often than other racial groups you get an “A”. The rate of first strokes in this group is almost double that of Caucasians. African Americans are more likely to die from a stroke than other American racial groups. Why? Well not all the reasons are clear but African Americans have higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and sickle cell disease. It’s a wake up call!

The National Stroke Association provides a Stroke Risk Scoreboard upon request and at no cost. Basically, if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, you smoke, are overweight, are a couch potato and have a family history of stroke, you are at high risk. What can you do if you realize that you are at high risk? Speak to your doctor. Ask him/her what can be done to lower your risk. Know the signs of stroke and take action immediately. This could save your life!

Next week I’ll share with you the warning signs of stroke. In the meantime, know your personal risk. Take charge of your life!

Communication/Marketing Committee Seeks Members
I am pleased that St. Mark continues to add new parishioners to our already 3,200 registered families. With our growth come opportunities to communicate many of the diverse events and other happenings taking place. We now have two principal means of communication, the St.Mark Bulletin and our St. Mark website. As we grow and times change, so does the form and content of both our internal and external communication efforts.

For these reasons I have asked Sal Luongo, volunteer Chair of our Communication/Marketing Committee and Chuck Rizzo, our staff member in charge of communications to initiate a fresh look at our communication efforts. I would ask that those of you interested in joining them and especially those of you who may have experience in this area contact either of them. Chuck can be reached at the church office, 813-907-7746 and Sal can be reached at 813-335-7624. Peace, Fr. David

Estate Plan – Measure up?
It is recommended that frequently your estate plan should be reviewed.
Here are some important areas that should be reviewed:

  1. Do you have a will or living trust drafted by a qualified attorney?
  2. Do you review and update your will every few years?
  3. Have you named an executor in your will and notified that person?
  4. If your estate is valued at more than $2 million,
have you made arrangements for minimizing federal estate taxes?
  5. Is your life insurance adequate for you and your family’s needs?
Are the beneficiary designations up to date?
  6. Do you have beneficiaries who require special care?
  7. Have you established a durable power of attorney in case you become incapacitated?
  8. Does your will name a guardian for any minor children you may have?
  9. Have you made any provisions for St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church
and any other charities of your interest?
  10. Do you have a living will or health care power of attorney

Should you have any questions, consult your attorney.
